Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
Generally, we primarily offer two major product categories: Stereo Microscopes for 3D viewing and manipulation, and Digital Monocular Video Microscopes designed for displaying images on a screen for inspection, measurement, and documentation.
Stereo Microscopes use two separate optical paths (one for each eye) to create a three-dimensional, upright image, making them ideal for tasks requiring depth perception like assembly, dissection, or detailed surface inspection. Digital Monocular Video Microscopes use a single optical path connected to a camera to display a 2D image on a monitor. They excel in applications like quality control, digital documentation, measurement, and integration into automated systems where screen viewing is preferred.
The necessary magnification depends entirely on the details you need to observe on your sample. Our Stereo Microscopes offer various ranges (e.g., 7X-45X, 8X-80X standard) and can reach higher magnifications with optional accessories. Our Digital Monocular Video systems have objective zoom ranges (e.g., 0.8X-5.0X, 0.6X-7.0X) which, combined with the camera and monitor, determine the final on-screen magnification. Consider the typical size of the features you need to see and consult the product specifications. We can assist you in selecting the appropriate range for your application.
Working Distance is the space between the front of the microscope’s main objective lens and the top of the focused specimen. A longer working distance provides more space for tools, hands, or larger objects under the microscope. Our standard stereo models offer WDs typically between 91mm and 110mm. This can be modified using auxiliary objective lenses.
We offer a comprehensive range of accessories, including different eyepieces (e.g., High Eyepoint, Extra Wide Field), auxiliary objectives (to adjust magnification and working distance), various focus mount and stands, illumination options (like LED ring lights, spotlights, and coaxial illuminators), digital cameras, and software solutions. Please see our Optional Accessories section for details.
- Yes, we tailor lens designs around your required working distance, camera sensor format, field of view (FOV) and minimum target size to deliver optimal imaging performance.
- We optimize focal length, magnification and element selection (achromatic, aspheric) to maximize resolution and contrast for your exact use case.
- Mechanical modifications—such as mounting dimensions, thread mounts, flange interfaces and detent stops—are made to integrate seamlessly with your equipment layout.

Our accessory range includes various objective lenses, eyepieces, illumination options (LED, halogen, fluorescent, polarized), focus mount, stands, XY stages, cameras, software for image analysis, and more. We offer solutions to customize our microscopes for specific applications.
Stereo Microscopes
Our stereo microscopes mainly fall into these categories based on their optical system:
- Parallel Optical Zoom (e.g., MZPS series): These provide parallel light paths, resulting in distortion-free (orthoscopic) images, excellent comfort for long observation periods, large depth of field, and long working distances. They are ideal for high-precision work and research.
- Greenough Optical Zoom (e.g., MZS series): These use the traditional Greenough design, offering large zoom ratios, large depth of field, long working distances, and are often very cost-effective. They are widely used in education, industry, and general research.
- Dual Magnification (e.g., MTS series): These offer two or three distinct magnification steps (like 1X/2X or 1X/3X) instead of a continuous zoom. They are simple to use, provide excellent parfocality (staying in focus between steps), and are great for routine inspection tasks.
- Coaxial Illumination Zoom (e.g., MZS1865C series): These models incorporate coaxial lighting (light travelling along the same axis as viewing) which is crucial for inspecting flat, reflective surfaces like semiconductors, LCDs, or wafers, providing high contrast and clear views of fine details.
Yes. Most of our stereo microscope series offer trinocular versions, indicated by a ‘T’ in the model name (e.g., MZPS0850T, MZS0745T). These models have a third optical port specifically designed for mounting a microscope camera, allowing you to view through the eyepieces and capture images or video simultaneously.
They are extremely versatile and used across many fields: scientific research (biology, medicine, environmental), industrial assembly and quality control, micro-electronics and semiconductor inspection, materials science, education, forensics, precision machining, and more. The best model depends on the specific requirements for image quality, magnification, working distance, and illumination.
Digital Monocular Video Microscopes
- Our extensive range includes:
- Zoom Monocular Video Series: Featuring continuous zoom for flexible magnification adjustment. These include series optimized for High Resolution (MZDH0850), Large Magnification Ratios (MZDH0670), Compact Size (MZDV0640), and High-Contrast Coaxial Illumination (MZDB/MZDA series).
- Fixed Magnification Monocular Video Series: Offering single, specific magnifications. These include popular models (MTDM), high-accuracy Telecentric Lens models (MTDY), specialized Tool-Setting/Double Magnification units (MTD), and Infinity Farness optics (MTDP) available to match metallographic lens to expan magnification.
- Zoom Monocular Microscope Series: These provide zoom capabilities, potentially with options for direct viewing as well as video output, including High-Contrast Coaxial (MZDA/MZDB) and High Magnification models (MZDH), some offering Erect (upright) images.
- Other Purpose Series: Specialized systems like 3D Rotated view microscopes (MZDR) and integrated Machine Vision lenses (MTV/CCTV series).
- Our extensive range includes:
The model codes provide key information. Generally: ‘M’ is the base; ‘Z’ often means Zoom, ‘T’/’MT’ means Fixed Mag; ‘D’ often indicates Digital/Video focus. Subsequent letters specify the series (e.g., ‘H’ for High-Res, ‘V’ for Mini, ‘R’ for Rotated, ‘A’/’B’ for specific series). The numbers (e.g., ‘0850’) typically relate to the objective magnification range (e.g., 0.8X – 5.0X). Suffixes denote features like ‘C’ for Coaxial Illumination, ‘T’ for Trinocular, ‘PL’ for Polarized Light, ‘D’ for Detent Stops (pre-set zoom positions). Please refer to our detailed model code explanation graphic for a full breakdown.
Coaxial illumination is essential when inspecting flat, smooth, or highly reflective surfaces common in semiconductor, LCD, LED, and micro-electronics industries. It provides even, shadow-free illumination directly down the optical axis, enhancing the visibility of fine surface details, defects, or features that might be obscured by glare with standard lighting. Look for models with a ‘C’ suffix (e.g., MZDH0850C, MZDH15100BTC).
Telecentric lenses are designed to minimize or eliminate perspective error. This means the magnification remains constant even if the object’s distance from the lens changes slightly. This is crucial for accurate, repeatable measurements in machine vision and quality control applications where object positioning might vary slightly.
